Camille Pissarro

"Happy are those who see beauty in the modest spots where others see nothing."

Juxtaposition

I love the beautiful potential for juxtaposition offered by the the Diana Mini split screen...

All images taken from the Diana Mini flikr group. I just noticed how autumnal my choice of photos is. I think I must be about ready to break out the stockings and scarves!

"I am at war with the obvious"

"I am afraid that there are more people than I can imagine who can go no further than apppreciating a picture that is a rectangle with an object in the middle of it, which they can identify. They don't care what is around the object as long as nothing interferes with the object itself, right in the center. Even after the lessons of Winogrand and Friedlander, they don't get it... They want the obvious... I am at war with the obvious" -- William Eggleston

Interesting looking documentaries on Eggleston here and here. I would love to see these.

Is it too late to get all "resolution-y"?

Hope not, because I've been wanting to re-post these beautiful resolutions from the pages of one of my favourite blogs, Roxy Marj. As well as being an incredibly talented craftsperson and illustrator...

... Roxy Marj also shared these wonderful resolutions at the beginning of 2010, which I've taken the liberty of stealing for myself also! I'm sure she wouldn't mind if you take on a few of these too... I'm pretty sure if everyone did it would make the world a much lovelier place ;)

Handbook 2010:

Health:
1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.
4. Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm and Empathy.
5. Make time to pray.
6. Play more games.
7. Read more books than you did in 2009.
8. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.
9. Sleep for 7 hours.
10. Take a 10-30 minute walk daily. And while you walk, smile!

Personality :
11. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
12. Don't have negative thoughts or things you cannot control... Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
13. Don't over do. Keep your limits.
14. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
15. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip.
16. Dream more while you are awake.
17. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
18. Forget issues of the past. Don't remind your partner with his/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness.
19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't hate others.
20. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.
21. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
22. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
23. Smile and laugh more.
24. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree...

Society:
25. Call your family often.
26. Each day give something good to others.
27. Forgive everyone for everything.
28. Spend time w/ people over the age of 70 and under the age of 6.
29. Try to make at least 3 people smile each day.
30. What other people think of you is none of your business.
31. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick, Your friends will. Stay in touch.

Life:
32. Do the right thing!
33. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
34. God heals everything.
35. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
36. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
37. The best is yet to come....
38. When you awake alive in the morning, thank God for it.
39. Your inner most is always happy. So, be happy.
40. [my own added thought] >>> Be kinder to everyone, especially yourself!

I love them all... but think I like #12, #16 and #22 the very, very best... what about you?

Wishing you lots of #23 for 2010...

As, hopefully, is my drought on blog posts.

Fingers crossed I can find a solution to having no interwebs at home soon!

And yes, I had a lovely break... obvs! :)

Hope you found something a little bit of something perfect (or near enough!) over the break as well...

This time last year...

... and the year before that, and the year before that (what can I say, I'm obsessed!) I was leaving on a jet plane for my beloved NYC. Bags packed, heart in chest, awaiting that first glimpse of the city from the plane... and the inevitable burst of excitement, love and crazy-can't-stop-smiling happiness that I would experience as Central Park became recognisable beneath me.

For a place I have spent most of my life NOT living in, it sure holds a lot of my most beloved memories... seeing my best friend get married in City Hall, my friend's band play the Bowery Ballroom (!!), my first Brooklyn date; drinking iced coffees and watching the sun sink below the buildings of Manhattan from across the East River (and later, my first NYC heartbreak... rushing to catch the subway as Avenue A was blurred by tears and rain before me, one cold and sad New York night a year after) and many, many days of discovering my new favorite dive bar, cupcake bakery, bagel shop, bodega, coffee shop, thrift store, art gallery, record store, dog park, cheap borscht restaurant... and everything else in-between, as I pounded the streets of the East Village, L.E.S and Brooklyn, over and over again on each lovely New York day.

Anyways, over the years I've learnt you can miss somewhere you aren't, while still loving where you ARE. So on this day I am very, very glad and grateful to be here, in my wonderful Melbs, with all my lovely friends... but also...

New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down!

I miss the hell outta you NYC!!! *sniff*

So... who's in for NEW YORK 2010??!!! ;)
